Meadow brown butterflies enjoying the flowers in Eltham Park North.

This section of meadow was improved last year with the help of @royal_greenwich and local families.
It’s looking really beautiful and providing pollen, nectar and shelter. Some species of butterfly use the grasses on which to lay their eggs, and some of the flowers are caterpillar food plants. 🐛

Loads of bees and bugs to see if you’re out and about for a walk.
The area of resown meadow is looking absolutely fabulous in Eltham Park North and has large areas of Yellow rattle, Bird’s-foot trefoil (a great pollinator wildflower and caterpillar plant) and Corn Chamomile.
It really is a beautiful sight. Hopefully we can get another strip done this year? 🤞

It’s National Children’s Gardening Week from May 24th - June 1st. 🌱 A week celebrating all the fun that gardens hold for kids.

Get the little ones outdoors this week and encourage them to grow some of their favourite flowers, fruit and vegetables...
Gardening gets children outside and closer to nature, and teaches them about our environment, ecosystems, healthy eating and nutrition.
There are many varieties to try. A good tip is to sow seeds that flower and fruit fairly quickly to keep kids interested. Plants are also available from local nurseries.
Zinnias, Sunflowers and Nasturtiums are great annual plants to grow from seed, with quick flowering times. The bees love them too! 🐝

Try growing in different pots and containers and place your seeds and plants in a nice sunny spot and water well.🌞

The most important thing is to have lots of fun!

Tomorrow - May 24th sees the start of @nationalchildrensgardeningweek 🌱
It’s a great time to get kids outside planting, growing and enjoying their outside spaces and having fun.
A great activity for kids to grow and help the bees at the same time is to make a solitary bee hotel from a recycled tin can, some jute or gardening string and bee nesting tubes or canes.
The house we made here is great for red mason bees 🐝… which also LOVE strawberry flowers 🌸.
Create a pot with a few strawberry plants and some compost (most nursery’s have strawberries in stock now), position your new bee house close by and you may be lucky and have Red mason bees in your new bee home!

A sunny UKBMS walk today with our new volunteer surveyor Katy ❤️🦋
Common and Holly Blues spotted in the Eltham North meadow and we were both delighted to see fabulous results from a large area of seed sown last autumn.
The Yellow rattle seed has germinated in abundance and is being visited by bees. This will hold back the vigorous grass and spread across the meadow, allowing more wildflowers to grow. 🌸🐝 Good news all round for pollinators and the biodiversity in the park.

The first stage of work is finished on our new plant nursery 🐝 🌱. We now have an amazing space to grow in and add a greenhouse to later this year, and some beautiful raised beds for trialling lots of fruit and veg.
The transformation has been fantastic to watch and with visual planning from @deanbown81 and the incredible work undertaken by @mk_landscape_and_design_ltd we now have this wonderful new nursery area.

To celebrate this special time, we are offering our local customers a 10% discount on all plants and wildflowers.
