Verbena bonariensis
A tall herbaceous perennial with erect, sparsely-leafed stems and numerous branched clusters of small, purple flowers.
A great plant for the back of the border.
Flowers from June until October.
Height: 1.5m / Spread: 45cm
A wonderful butterfly plant but also loved by bees and other pollinators. Seed heads can be left for the birds, until new growth emerges the following spring.
RHS 'Plants for Pollinators' - RHS 'Garden of merit' award.
Grow in full sun, in moist but well-drained soil - Clay/ Chalk/ Sand/ Loam.
Grow in a mass for best effect. Water deeply to encourage root growth. May require a frame to grow on.
Cut flowers regularly to encourage growth and to prolong flowering. Deadhead if you do not want it to self-seed. Cut back in spring once new shoots emerge at the base.
In cold areas, protect with a dry winter mulch.
